Woke Church by Eric Mason

(Format used for this read: Print–hardback)

Finished this 184 page book with 30+ pages of handwritten notes of things I wanted to remember, Scriptures to dive into, and history I needed to reteach myself.

Eric Mason is always 🔥 y’all.

He is so educated and passionate and most importantly FILLED TO OVERFLOWING with the Spirit. I am grateful and thankful my friend Kristina told me to listen to his preaching a couple years ago.

(Go hear his sermons on his podcast from his church in Philly called Epiphany Fellowship…you will blessed and educated)

Here is the books description taken from the back cover:

“woke: adj. 1) able to understand how cultural, socioeconomic, philosophical, and historical realities inform our responsibility as believers in Jesus Christ.

The church in America should have rejected the first whispers of slavery. But we didn’t. We should have preached about the image of God when the dark skinned among us were declared subhuman. But we didn’t. We should have stopped segregation and Jim Crow before they affected our communities. But we didn’t. We should have protested racial profiling and police brutality before anyone else. We should have been woke, but we’ve been asleep.

Dr Eric Mason challenges the church in America: Get up, sleeper and rise from the dead. It’s time to take a hard look at our history and stand together against the indignities and injustice in our world—to understand that justice is both theological and sociological—that there is no intimacy with God without justice in ones heart.

No more waiting. No more sleeping. Christ our King is coming back, and He’ll be looking for a woke church.”

This book is not a long read but it is not an easy read. There are uncomfortable truths to face about the history and present of our church but it is so necessary to hear them.

Living in a state of disunion many people want to know “how do we fix it?”

Before that work can begin, we must LISTEN and learn and face real history and HEAR with our hearts and minds and ears from voices that are different from ours.

Fellow Christ followers, especially my white brothers and sisters, I urge you to read this…and really LISTEN.
