The Hitch-hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
(Format used for this read: Audiobook)
Who knew this would be the year I started liking coffee, dark beer, Marvel comics and science fiction?
It’s been a fun journey with these new enjoyments and this latest read fit perfectly.
Here is a summary:
“Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.
Together, this dynamic pair began a journey through space aided by a galaxyful of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox—the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian (formerly Tricia McMillan), Zaphod’s girlfriend, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; and Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he’s bought over the years.
Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? For all the answers, stick your thumb to the stars! “
I will clarify something before I get started here …
I really only enjoy FUNNY science fiction.
I do NOT like creepy or violent or scary stuff (like the movie “Alien”…NO THANK YOU BUH BYE)
This classic book however was SO DAMN HYSTERICAL!
British humor has always been a favorite of mine…and now that I sent my DNA into Ancestry recently and know that I am 80% British it makes complete sense 🤣
Dry, sarcastic, thought provoking wit…that’s the way to do it.
The dialogue between Ford and Arthur in the beginning of the book and then Marvin the depressed robot had me ROLLING.
(And the realization of the TRUE purpose of mice on planet Earth 🤣…you gotta read it to see what I mean )
I will admit…some of the explanations of dimensions and multiple universe creations went a TAD bit over my head…but it did not disrupt my thorough enjoyment of the book.
I know this is just the first in a series so obviously I’ll have to read the rest!
And I know multiple movies have been made so I can’t wait to see how what I visualized in my head compares to the cinematic view of the movie.
Great fun this book.
Great fun indeed 😃
