Home Is Where The Bodies Are by Jeneva Rose

(Format used for this read: Audiobook)

After their mother passes, three estranged siblings reunite to sort out her estate. Beth, the oldest, never left home. She stayed with her mom, caring for her until the very end. Nicole, the middle child, has been kept at arm’s length due to her ongoing battle with a serious drug addiction. Michael, the youngest, lives out of state and hasn’t been back to their small Wisconsin town since their father ran out on them seven years before.

While going through their parents’ belongings, the siblings stumble upon a collection of home videos and decide to revisit those happier memories. However, the nostalgia is cut short when one of the VHS tapes reveals a night back in 1999 that none of them have any recollection of. On screen, their father appears covered in blood. What follows is a dead body and a pact between their parents to get rid of it, before the video abruptly ends.

Beth, Nicole, and Michael must now decide whether to leave the past in the past or uncover the dark secret their mother took to her grave.

I don’t really like this type of book most of the time…so I don’t know what kind of literary wild hair got me to give this one a go….but YALL.

This was NOT a fun time for me.

I couldn’t WAIT for it to be over, actually.

Complete mediocre Lifetime murder movie vibes FOR SURE.

Which ain’t even CLOSE to being my thing.

I guess I decided to read it because I needed something different and I kept seeing this one all over the place….SHAME ON ME for jumping on the book bandwagon when I KNOW this is NOT for me!

At first I was like….maybe this won’t be too bad….

Oh there’s multiple narrators! I love those.

But then as I kept listening, I quickly realized those multiple narrators were actually AWFUL. Super cheesy and over dramatic in their reading…ESPECIALLY the brother. OMGGGGG the overly pronounced words reminded me of some old school detective film noir B movie. He was SO DAMN BAD.

And one of the sisters sounded like she was on the brink of breaking down into tears THE ENTIRE FRIGGIN BOOK. It was legit ANNOYING AF.

This story was hella predictable (I figured out the mysterious killer within the first few chapters, yall), had shaky plot development, and just felt like an old and tired story that’s been done in multiple ways many times before.

It was boring. It was cheesy. And it was IRRITATING.

The only reason I was on the edge of my seat was because I was so ready for it to be DONE.

BLECH.

Hated it.

I am moving on to the next read WITH A DAMN QUICKNESS.
