Harry Potter and The Cursed Child by JK Rowling, John Tiffany & Jack Thorne

(Format used for this read: Print–Hardback from the library…who knows when I’ll be able to return it…)

As a longtime Harry Potter fan, I do not know how in the WORLD I have let 4 years go by without reading this script!

Seriously.

NO CLUE.

Like back in the day I literally was one of those grown ass women standing in line at midnight at Barnes and Noble for the last couple books to be released…with a lightening bolt drawn on my forehead 🤣

But I finally DID read it and OMG it was glorious.

I didn’t know I much I missed them!

Here is the summary:

“It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son, Albus, must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: Sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

The playscript for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was originally released as a “special rehearsal edition” alongside the opening of Jack Thorne’s play in London’s West End in summer 2016. Based on an original story by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany, and Jack Thorne, the play opened to rapturous reviews from theatergoers and critics alike, while the official playscript became an immediate global bestseller.”

As a middle aged parent of a teenager I have to say I so enjoyed reading about my fave magical characters having the same parental struggles as me right now:

changing relationships, surly and dramatic outbursts, and always wondering if what you are doing is the right thing or just adding to the list of things they will need to tell a therapist one day 🤣

It was also super fun to see how all the characters personalities have evolved yet also still remain true with the Hogwarts kiddos we fell in love with.

Harry is still always second guessing himself, Hermione is still smart and bossy, Ron is still sarcastically witty, Ginny is still the strong level headed supporter, and Draco is still trying to figure out how to do the right thing.

And to see how all their traits (good and bad and in between) have been passed to their offspring is fascinating.

Their kids pulled me right in to their own story just like they did years ago and just stole my heart all over again.

This story stays true to the book series in that it has plenty of adventure, good vs evil battles, relationship struggles, deep friendships, humor and of course MAGIC.

There are plenty of cameos from other beloved characters too: Professor McGonnagall, Dumbledore, even Hagrid.

I do NOT want to give any of the interesting plot twists or character development away in this review so I am actually not going to say much more.

Because if any of you Potter fans out there are waaaayy behind like I am I can’t ruin this for you!!!! (Wait til you see who becomes Harry’s son—Albus—best friend, y’all….When I first read the name I was like “WTF?!?!”)

What I will say is I HAVE GOT TO SEE THIS PLAY ON STAGE!

My imagination was on overload picturing all the scenery and effects and costumes and lighting and staging!!

I can’t remember the last time I read a script for fun but I really forgot how enjoyable it is…and it reminded me of how much I freaking LOOOOVE live theatre ❤️

One day when our world is back together again and Broadway turns its lights back on, I am going to find a way to get my butt in a seat for this show as soon as I possibly can!
